Sydney beefs up security for ASEAN summit

Top police officials and the Australian foreign minister are confident in the tough security measures being imposed on Sydney for this weekend's ASEAN summit.

Heightened security powers for this weekend's ASEAN summit have the tick of approval from the nation's top politicians and police commanders as protesters gear up to oppose one high-profile guest.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will host Southeast Asian leaders on Saturday and Sunday for a special summit to discuss regional security, economic ties and counter-terrorism measures.

But representatives of Sydney's Cambodian diaspora will stage two demonstrations in the CBD over the weekend to protest the country's visiting prime minister Hun Sen.

NSW Police Minister Troy Grant beefed up police powers to allow the force to block off parts of the city, conduct searches, remove vehicles that are causing obstructions and prevent drone flights.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Willing said the laws, which will temporarily allow traffic changes and road closures, will see ASEAN's VIPs travel safely through the city.
