A technical fault has forced a Sydney-bound Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi to make an emergency landing in Adelaide after the onboard smoke alarm went off.
Etihad flight EY450 was forced to land in Adelaide at 5am on Saturday morning, with passengers leaving via the plane's emergency exits.
The aircraft made the emergency landing after a warning alert was received in the cockpit, an Etihad spokesperson told AAP.
The spokesperson said a technical fault with a cargo hold air fan was at fault.
"Etihad Airways apologises for the inconvenience. The safety of our guests and crew is of paramount importance," the spokesperson told AAP.
The mid-air technical fault forced the airline to cancel the return flight EY451 from Sydney to Abu Dhabi.
"Guests who have been booked on the flight will be re-booked on later Etihad Airways services out of Sydney," the spokesperson said.
