Hundreds of diehard sports fans and excitable schoolchildren have flocked to the Sydney Opera House to welcome home Australia's Olympic team.

Crowds dolled up in their green and gold fineries waved flags and belted out patriotic chants as the athletes took centre stage on Monday afternoon.

A colourful troupe of Brazilian dancers and drummers joined NSW Premier Mike Baird and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore to rub shoulders with the Olympians and celebrate their efforts at Rio.
