Two workers left dangling 60 metres above the ground when a crane collapsed in North Sydney have been released from hospital.

The men escaped without serious injury when the crane, perched on the roof of a Meriton building, malfunctioned, collapsed and hit a concrete well at a construction site on Arthur Street on Sunday morning.

A third man was also injured after the collapse, which is under investigation.

Two of the trio were discharged from Royal North Shore Hospital on Monday while the other continues to be monitored, Meriton said in a statement.

The men - aged 24, 28 and 36 - were attached by lanyards when the crane fell after a possible mechanical failure.

The 24-year-old managed to free himself and climb to the roof of the building while fellow workers used a second crane to lower a metal box to the trapped men and lower them to the ground.

CFMEU NSW secretary Brian Parker said a mechanical failure may have caused the collapse of the tower crane, operated by Titan Cranes & Rigging.

The broken crane would need to be analysed very carefully, he said.

Meriton Group director David Cremona said his company "is working closely with its specialist crane contractor, Safework NSW, the CFMEU and NSW emergency" to investigate the incident.
