Sydney duo Polish Club hoping to rock the ARIA Awards

Polish Club's debut album is up for Best Rock Album at Tuesday's ARIAs. They tell SBS News how they came up with their name.

Polish Club might have a modest backstory, but they're in for the star treatment with a nomination at this year's ARIA Awards.

The Sydney duo's debut album Alright Already has been nominated for Best Rock Album at the awards, which take place in their home city on Tuesday night.

Vocalist and guitarist David Novak and drummer John-Henry Pajak started the band two years ago. Originally a four-piece, they decided to go their own way.

"So we halved the numbers and booked a room for three hours, and we had five or six songs ..." Novak told SBS News.

All that was left was to come up with a name.

Polish Club came about because Pajak's parents are Polish and Novak's father is of Polish descent.

"John's more Polish than I am," Novak said.

"My dad came here when he was eight with his parents who are both Polish.

"They were in a concentration camp through the war and they got out of that fortunately and came to Sydney."

Eventually, the duo would like to learn to speak Polish but say they have been too busy making music. They spent little time on their album cover though, which features a Polish club in the Sydney suburb of Ashfield.

"It was already there, it was cheap and easy, we didn't have to choose a font."

To complement the cover, the Ashfield club's manager Lucian Romanowski worked with the band to create a series of tongue-in-cheek video clips promoting songs on the album.

"He was super into it, he kind of became the star of the whole campaign,"  Novak said.

"He brought 20 suits the day that we were going to shoot him ... it was great."

"Polish people love attention," Pajak said.
The band say being nominated for an ARIA Award never crossed their minds.

"Now we get to act like idiots on the red carpet," Novak said.

Also up for Best Rock Album are Gang of Youths, The Preatures, Dune Rats, and Dan Sultan.

"We just played with The Preatures on their tour a couple of months ago, and we've played with Gang of Youths who are going to win everything," Novak said.
Polish Club begin their national tour Christmas in December on December 1, performing in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

They also have plans to perform in the UK and United States, and hope of one day playing in Poland.

The ARIA Awards 2017 take place at Sydney's The Star casino on November 28.
