A blaze at a western Sydney waste recycling centre is contained but could continue burning for days with firefighters unable to enter the building.

The Chullora fire is likely to smoulder and flare up overnight, burning through plastics, carpet, cardboard and paper, a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman told AAP on Thursday.

"We can't go in there because the roof's collapsed. It's too dangerous to go inside," he said.

More than 120 firefighters battled to contain the blaze which sent black smoke billowing across Sydney's west on Thursday.

Dozens of crews rushed to Muir Road after 9.15am, with the large fire brought under control within an hour. All workers were accounted for at the business.

The large complex handles batteries, oil, metals, paint and solvents and electrical equipment, according to the SUEZ Chullora Resource Recovery Park website.

"There are some gas cylinders in there which the firefighters have been cooling," an RFS spokeswoman said.

Images on social media show crews perched on aerial appliances to douse flames from above.

A number of compressed air foam tankers were also used to fight the fire.

The nearby Bankstown Airport was not affected by the plume of smoke, an airport spokeswoman told AAP.
