A former Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer who lit a string of fires before helping to put them out says he's going to appeal his conviction.

Joshua Staples, 20, was sentenced to 18 months' jail with a non-parole period of one year in September.

He is on bail pending his appeal and faced Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

His lawyer Bryan Wrench said "fresh evidence" would be introduced and that this would be "a lengthy matter".

Outside the court, Mr Wrench told reporters Staples would "appeal in the conviction".

Staples, who was dressed in a navy suit and tie, said nothing as he walked out of the court.

Staples, from Badgerys Creek, was convicted of deliberately starting multiple grass and bin fires at Bringelly, Badgerys Creek and Greendale in January 2011.

In several instances, Staples then joined his RFS colleagues and helped extinguish the blazes, the court has previously heard.

He was found guilty in a local court hearing where Magistrate Michelle Goodwin accepted the evidence of Staples' grandmother, who previously told the court her grandson had broken down and confessed to lighting the fires.

A police-tracking device placed on cars used by Staples also provided "powerful" and "overwhelming" proof that Staples had lit nine fires in January 2011, Ms Goodwin told Downing Centre Local Court at the time.

His matter has been stood over until next week.
