A western Sydney girls school has been placed in lockdown after a man armed with a knife walked into the front office and demanded money.

The man entered Auburn Girls High School on Thursday afternoon and stole cash before fleeing the scene, NSW Police said in a statement.

A person, who said her sister attended the school, wrote on Facebook that a man armed with a knife "walked into the front office and stole cash".

A student said on Facebook the school was in lockdown for 50 minutes "but everything is fine now".

No one was injured in the incident, police said.
