About 11,000 homes and businesses have lost power in Sydney's west, as soaring temperatures place pressure on the state's power supply.

The blackout is due to a fault at a major substation and is not load shedding, Ausgrid says.

The main suburbs affected by the blackout are Strathfield, Burwood, Croydon and Homebush.

Power to most customers in Strathfield & Burwood has been restored, and crews are working to reconnect 750 properties around Burwood Rd & Queen St, Ausgrid said.
