An emergency warning is being issued for a scrub fire that's broken out near homes at Leppington in southwestern Sydney.

The fire is burning in the Leppington area near Camden Valley Way and Cowpasture Road.

The Rural Fire Service says it understands Camden Valley Way is closed as a result.

A spokesman said the fire was burning in a northerly direction towards West Hoxton and Bringelly Road.

Homes in the area were under threat and firefighters were at the scene, the spokesman said.
