A man performing clerical duties for a Sydney business allegedly embezzled more than $1 million over eight years without being caught.

Police were only contacted in August after the company's director noticed a number of inconsistencies in the Marrickville-based business's accounts.

Officers then arrested an Erskine Park man on Saturday and charged him with 41 offences relating to the alleged embezzlement of $1.12 million.

The 45-year-old man was performing clerical duties when he allegedly stole the money between 2007 and early this year, when he left the company.

He's due to appear before Newtown Local Court in early December.
