Sydney man dies after being hit by ute

A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a ute in Sydney's north, while a Lake Macquarie driver died when his car hit a power pole.

Police are waiting to question the driver of a ute who hit and killed a 20-year-old pedestrian in Sydney to find out what caused the crash.

James Gray was crossing Victoria Rd in Gladesville just after 2am on Saturday when he was struck by the Holden utility.

Gray had reportedly spent a night out with friends at a nearby pub, then visited a local kebab shop, before deciding to head home.

Police say he was crossing the street in an unmarked area when he was hit.

Security camera footage of the crash showed the ute hurtling along Victoria Rd before striking Gray. The driver hit him at such force he was covered in glass and blood.

The driver was treated for shock at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Police say they were still investigating the cause of the crash and whether alcohol, drugs and speed were at play.

They were calling for any witnesses to come forward.

Hours later in Lake Macquarie, a Morisset man died when his car hit a power pole.

Bystanders and police tried to assist the man but he died at the scene at about 4am.

More than 300 people have died on NSW roads in 2017.
