An inmate has been charged with murder following the death of his cellmate at a Sydney correctional facility.

About 7.45pm on Monday, officers from Auburn Police Area Command were called to the corrections centre at Silverwater following the death of an inmate.

Police were told the 39-year-old man was located unresponsive in his cell, and despite the efforts of correctives officers and nurses, he was unable to be revived.

A crime scene was established inside the facility, which was examined by specialist officers.

Detectives from Auburn Police Area Command, assisted by the Corrective Services Investigation Unit, started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Following inquiries, a 35-year-old male inmate, who was sharing a cell with the other man, was arrested and later charged with murder.
