Sydney shooting and brawl may be linked

Police are still trying to work out how a 27-year-old Sydney man sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

A gunshot fired in Sydney's inner west and a man found later with bullet wounds could be linked.

Officers swooped on Queen St in Petersham at about 2am on Sunday morning after reports of a single gunshot fired in a public car park.

Witnesses also reported hearing yelling, breaking glass and a car speeding off from the area, police say.

Nobody was found injured at the scene.

About 20 minutes later, police spotted a 27-year-old man, who had been shot in the groin and stomach, sitting in the passenger seat of a ute which had been pulled over for a random breath test in Merrylands, about 20km from Petersham.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Acting Superintendent Damian Henry said it was still unclear how the man was injured or what type of firearm was used.

He is yet to be interviewed by police.

Four men travelling with the shot man have been questioned and will be spoken to again in coming days, Acting Supt Henry told reporters on Sunday.

"There are a number of lines of investigation we're following up at the moment," he said.

"But we're still relying on the public to come forward."

Acting Supt Henry said detectives have spoken with Marrickville Local Police investigating an overnight brawl at Petersham.

"It's very early in the investigation - there's no conclusive links at this stage," he said.

"Detectives this afternoon are going forward with a number of lines of inquiry and that's certainly one of them."
