A man accused of assaulting a man before barricading himself inside a Sydney home while armed with a knife will remain in custody ahead of his next court appearance.

Tactical police and negotiators were called to a Lewisham house and arrested Karl Anthony Herden after a four-hour stand-off on Friday evening and later charged him with common assault and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The 40-year-old did not appear and did not apply for bail when his matter was briefly mentioned at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday afternoon.

Herden is due to appear via audio visual link at Central Local Court on Wednesday.
