Sydney siege sparks #illridewithyou Twitter campaign

A Twitter campaign rallying against Islamophobia has sprouted up online following a siege today in central Sydney.

A tide of anti-Islamic sentiment that cropped up Monday in response to a siege in Sydney’s CBD has been met with a positive campaign rallying against Islamaphobia.

The hashtag #illridewithyou emerged this afternoon and has since been tweeted thousands of times.

It began with this tweet from Twitter user "Sir Tessa":

Hundreds of others have since adopted the hashtag pledging to ride public transport with Muslim people tomorrow, or give them a ride to work, in order to keep them safe.

It is now trending around the world.
