Sydneysiders have sweltered through the hottest summer on record.

The mean temperature in the city was 2.8C above average over the past three months, the Bureau of Meteorology said on Wednesday.

Sydney experienced a record-breaking 26 days of 30C or higher and 11 days of 35C or higher.

Records were broken for the number of hot days and nights especially on February 10 and 11, where Richmond peaked at 47C and Penrith 46.9C.

It was also the warmest summer for the whole of NSW in terms of average maximum and mean temperatures.

In the northern NSW town of Moree, residents sweated through 54 consecutive days above 35C, breaking a state-wide record.

Heatwaves are occurring more often, are more intense and are lasting longer, bureau senior climatologist Agatha Imielska told AAP on Wednesday.

Rainfall across the state over summer was 35 per below average, with some regions such as Mudgee and Oberon experiencing the driest conditions since 1990.

And it's looking like another hot three months ahead, with a drier and warmer autumn predicted.

There's an increased chance of an El Nino event this year, Ms Imielska added.
