A Sydney cabbie is in an induced coma after being stabbed 10 times in the neck and shoulders.

A Sydney taxi driver has been stabbed repeatedly in the neck and shoulders and is in an induced coma in hospital.

Police were called to Fitzroy Place at the inner Sydney suburb of Surry Hills before midnight on Monday in response to reports of a taxi driver being assaulted.

They found a 71-year-old man sitting in his vehicle with 10 stab wounds to his neck and shoulders.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he remains in an induced coma.

Police want to speak to a man last seen running towards Crown Street.

He is thought to be a Caucasian in his 30s and was last seen wearing a white short-sleeved shirt, blue denim shorts and a red hat.
