Sydney teen charged over car owner attack

A 16-year-old boy has been charged after he allegedly attacked a man with a torch while trying to steal the man's car.

A teenager has been charged after allegedly bashing a man in the head with a torch while trying to steal his car in Sydney's west.

The 16-year-old was trying to steal a car from a home in Green Valley in the early hours of Sunday when he was confronted by its owner, who tried to detain him, NSW police said in a statement.

The teen hit the 47-year-old man several times in the head with a torch leaving the man with a number of lacerations, police said.

The man was taken to Liverpool hospital in a stable condition.

With help of the dog squad police were able to track down and arrest the teen.

The teen was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, steal from motor vehicle and goods in custody.

He was granted bail and will face Children's court on May 29.
