A Sydney teenager faces the prospect of life behind bars after admitting he planned an Anzac Day terror attack.

The boy, then 16, had conversed with undercover police officers online in the lead-up to dawn services in April last year.

He used an encrypted message app to attempt to obtain a gun and when that failed, a bomb manual.

The teenager appeared in Parramatta Children's Court on Friday where he pleaded guilty to planning a terrorist act.

Prosecutors have said the teen sent a message saying he aimed for an Anzac Day attack because of the associated celebrations.

"I want to terrorise them on that day," he wrote.

The case will return to court in late April.
