Sydney Thunder officials are closely monitoring BBL crowd favourite Andre Russell's preliminary hearing before an independent anti-doping disciplinary panel.

Russell failed to update a whereabouts diary for drug testers three times within a 12-month period, and will face the panel next week.

The misdemeanour offence can result in bans of up two years and Thunder management have been in close contact with the West Indian's management before they make a call on his role next season.

"They are keeping us posted," Cummins told AAP.

"We're largely being guided by his management. We'll monitor it and react accordingly depending on what the outcome is."

Thunder management are certain none of the breaches came during Russell's time in Australia, where he scored 185 runs and took 16 wickets to help the franchise to the title.

The 28-year-old avoided a provisional suspension after he was hit with the charge in February.

Under world anti-doping rules, athletes must tell their local agency where they will be for at least an hour each day between 6am and 11pm to allow for drug tests.

The Thunder also believe there is no suggestion he had deliberately tried to avoid any testing or that he had taken performance-enhancing drugs.
