Authorities are investigating what caused a Sydney passenger train to plough into a rail barrier at a train station, injuring more than a dozen people.
The train smashed into the end of the line at Richmond Station on Monday morning, crushing the bumper and causing part of the train to lift on impact.
A total of 16 people, including the driver and two other staff members, were treated at the scene.
Fifteen people were taken to various hospitals for treatment, including a 21-year-old man with a suspected broken leg and an elderly woman with a fractured collarbone.
Most of the injured were discharged from hospital by Monday evening; however, several were still being treated.
Three women aged 77, 69 and 60 and a 22-year-old man remained in stable condition at Westmead Hospital while two men aged 59 and 32 were also stable at Nepean Hospital.
Witnesses described the incident as "insane".
Passenger Jaiden Ruttley, who was towards the back of the train, said it felt like "the whole train had lifted up in the air".
Sydney Trains boss Howard Collins said it was too early to speculate about the cause but from what he had seen, the buffer stop worked "effectively".
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Office of Transport Safety and the Office of National Rail Safety Regulator are investigating the incident.
