Sydney trains will be controlled from a single location in an effort to reduce commuter delays.

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced the $276 million Sydney Trains Rail Operations Centre to be built at Green Square, and said it meant rail workers won't have to manually respond to incidents.

Train and track management, incident response and customer communication, which are currently monitored from different locations and in different ways, will be brought under one roof.

Mr Constance said that under the current system multiple phone calls were made between the person reporting the incident, the person who controls the trains, another party in charge of fixing the fault and the response team in the field.

The new centre means workers who control trains and those who fix faults will immediately be aware of issues once they're reported.

The facility is due to open in 2018.
