The National Parks Association is investigating why Eastern Water Dragons are taking up residence in Sydney backyards.

While Game of Thrones queen Khaleesi pays close attention to her pet dragons in the sky, Sydneysiders are being asked to keep their eyes peeled for the native variety in their own backyard.

The National Parks Association is surveying residents to find out what keeps Eastern Water Dragons happy in their new home of choice.

The ancient lizard, which can grow up to one metre in length, has been thriving in Australia's ecosystem for more than 20 million years.

Urban development, however, is pushing them out of their natural habitat of coastal bushland and into the sunny backyards and pools of the suburbs

"We want to find out what encourages Eastern Water Dragons to appear in your backyard, which will give us information on how to create more Dragon Backyards," Stephanie Clark, Citizen Science Officer with National Parks Association said in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, for environmental enthusiasts looking to document animal activity in the city's inner west, Sydney Park is hosting a "bioblitz" giving citizen scientists the chance to discover new species.

This weekend, members of the community can help record the flourishing ecosystem in the St Peters parkland, which is full of birds, bugs, frogs, and plants, some yet undiscovered.

"Visitors to the park have spotted everything from peregrine falcons to blue-tongue lizards and migratory birds from Siberia," Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in a statement.
