An alleged chemical attack over an area near Damascus has triggered a war of words within the Syrian community here in Australia.

The main Syrian opposition group claims that as many as 1,300 people were killed in a chemical weapons attack Wednesday on rebel areas near Damascus.

A protest against the Assad regime took place tonight at Bankstown in Sydney's west.

Rebel supporters say the gas attack is the work of a blood thirsty dictator made possible by the inaction of western governments. But expatriates loyal to President Bashar al-Assad say the video evidence is fake.
