The bureau of statistics is set to release its first response rate estimate for same-sex marriage surveys.
The tally will be released on Tuesday but will not include results of how the vote is split between 'yes' and 'no' camps.
The bureau will provide weekly updates until the postal survey closes on November 7.
"These updates may encourage participation by those who have not yet responded and will inform reasonable public expectations about the likely final level of response," deputy Australian statistician Jonathan Palmer said.
The count will be based on Australia Post's assessment of the number of containers of sorted envelopes rather than counts of individual forms, he said.
The bureau will apply some adjustments to factor in invalid forms.
The results of the same sex marriage survey will be published on November 15.
