Former federal politician and finance minister, Lindsay Tanner, has been appointed as Essendon Football Club chairman after the resignation of Paul Little.
The Bombers' board ratified the appointment following the club's annual general meeting on Monday.
Tanner, who held the seat of Melbourne from 1993 to 2010, was announced as one of two new board members last week and said he was "deeply honoured to succeed Paul Little".
"As a club we have managed to stay united, and I pay great tribute to Paul Little for his tireless work in extremely difficult circumstances, he kept the Essendon family together when many other clubs would have crumbled," Tanner said in a statement.
"The Essendon Football Club owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Paul for his service to the club during this challenging period in our history."
The Bombers have been through the most tumultuous time in the AFL club's history with the 2012 supplements program and subsequent ASADA investigation taking its toll at Windy Hill.
Coach James Hird ultimately stood down this season as his position became increasingly untenable, John Worsfold appointed to the role in a three-year deal.
While the AFL anti-doping tribunal cleared 34 current and former players of using a banned peptide in their 2012 supplements program the World Anti-Doping Authority formally appealed the decision last month.
A decision is expected to be several months away.
