Target stars for 2019 Aussie summer: Scott

A December date for the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne could see the Australian summer of golf events pick up a handful of stars down under.

Adam Scott has urged tournament organisers in Australia not to miss an opportunity to land golf's biggest stars when the 2019 Presidents Cup heads to Melbourne.

The PGA Tour last week announced the 2019 edition of the biennial teams event at Royal Melbourne Golf Club will be held in December, bringing it in line with the Australian summer of golf events.

Scott says targeting stars such as three-time major winner Jordan Spieth, who has played each Australian Open since winning in 2014, is a no-brainer.

With last week's Presidents Cup in New Jersey featuring 18 of the world's top 30 across the US and Internationals teams, a star-studded lineup is sure to descend on the famed Royal Melbourne.

"Hopefully the event (organisers) will be planning for that and 2019 will be a great summer of golf in Australia," Scott told AAP after the Internationals' 19-11 Presidents Cup loss in New Jersey.

"You can't ask for a better opportunity than having a Presidents Cup come down under."

With Masters winner Sergio Garcia teeing up at the Australian PGA Championship in December and Spieth in Sydney to defend his second Open title, Scott claims Australia is becoming a sought-after destination for US PGA Tour players.

"The guys are so pumped about travelling and playing great courses, especially the young American players," he said.

"Jordan is coming back all the time he just loves Sydney

"I expect them all to not only embrace the 2019 Presidents Cup but want to embrace Australia as well."

World No.7 Jason Day, who in November will make his first return to Australia in four years at the Open, welcomed the 2019 move from its usual date of early October.

"I'm looking forward to the change of date because also we have the Australian golf tournaments around the same time, so they may be able to grab a few guys who may not have been playing in Australia if it wasn't for the Presidents Cup," said Day.

Two-time winner on the US PGA Tour in 2017, Marc Leishman implored Australian fans to fill the galleries at Royal Melbourne and convince PGA Tour officials to keep bringing the biennial teams event to Australia.

The Presidents Cup has previously been held at Royal Melbourne in 1998 and 2011.

"It would be nice if the crowds could really, really get behind us," said Victorian native Leishman.

"The Americans got a lot of support (in New Jersey); they were big crowds. It was almost a football crowd.

"I feel like if we could have that in Australia, that might benefit us."
