Tarzia named Speaker in SA parliament

The man who defeated Nick Xenophon at the recent South Australian election, Vincent Tarzia, has been named Speaker.

The man who fought off the challenge from Nick Xenophon at the South Australian election has been sworn in as Speaker in the new parliament.

Vincent Tarzia becomes the parliament's 35th and youngest Speaker after successfully defending his Liberal seat of Hartley at the March poll.

"I look forward to working with you all to maintain the decorum and dignity of the house and look forward to all of us working together for the advancement of the great state of South Australia," Mr Tarzia told the parliament on Thursday.

Premier Steven Marshall commended the 31-year-old for his re-election and elevation from a shadow cabinet secretary position in opposition.

"You surprised many of the pundits, you surprised many of the so-called experts but you did not surprise those who know how hard you have worked on behalf of the constitutes of Hartley," Mr Marshall said.

Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas congratulated Mr Tarzia and said he hoped he would remain independent and objective, and allow for civil debate in the house.

"I am eager to demonstrate that one can be passionate about and robust during debates whilst also maintaining a standard of civility," Mr Malinauskas said.

The new Liberal government will control 25 seats in the House of Assembly, with Labor having 19 and three in the hands of independents.

It marks the first time the party has held government in SA in 16 years.
