Tasmania's Aboriginal Heritage Act, designed to protect the state's indigenous history, will be subject to a broad review.
Key aspects of the act, including what constitutes Aboriginal heritage, will be examined, the state government announced on Thursday during National Reconciliation Week.
The laws surrounding ownership of Aboriginal heritage and how it's managed will also be up for review.
Two years ago, the state government increased penalties for vandalising Aboriginal heritage, but said further work needs to be done.
"This is an opportunity for all Tasmanians to consider the effectiveness of the act and to identify areas for improvement," Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Jacquie Petrusma said.
Public submissions close on September 21, with the review to be tabled in parliament by February 2021.
