Tas coach strong after Shield thumping

Tasmania's stand-in Sheffield Shield coach Richard Allenby isn't afraid to make changes after the side's crushing innings-and-172-run loss to Queensland.

Interim coach Richard Allenby insists he's the right man for the permanent job of managing Tasmania's Sheffield Shield side, despite their latest annihilation at the hands of Queensland.

The Tigers suffered an innings-and-172-run drubbing at Bellerive Oval on Thursday in a match that finished more than a day-and-a-half early as the hosts were skittled for 150 and 115 respectively.

Allenby took over as temporary coach after the sacking of Dan Marsh in February amid the side's consistent poor form, and the team still languishes last on the competition ladder, with a draw and loss under the new manager.

"That's for others to decide," Allenby answered when asked if the latest loss makes tougher his application for the role.

"I certainly am a career coach and want to coach this cricket team going forward."

Across two innings No.8 batsman Simon Milenko top-scored for Tassie with 39 and Allenby said there is certainly the possibility that he will move up the order as changes to the XI are considered.

Skipper George Bailey added 13 and 18 in his two innings while Australian one-day allrounder James Faulkner managed a duck and eight.

Tasmania lost eight wickets for 50 after resuming at 0-20 on day three.

"We are not good enough against the seaming and swinging ball, there's no doubt about that," Allenby said.

He pointed to last round's washed out draw with NSW, when Bailey scored his maiden first-class double ton, to suggest there is talent in the ranks.

"Last week showed us that we can play some decent cricket over three days," the coach said.

Allenby said he plans to have talks with players and isn't afraid to make changes.

"I'm a coach who will, if I see something, I will change it.

"We will have a good, honest discussion and just see if some really want to play for Tasmania or if some are picking up a pay cheque."

Bottom-of-the-ladder Tassie host South Australia next week in the last season round, with the hosts playing for pride.
