Tas girl, 12, charged with speeding

A 12-year-old Tasmanian girl caught driving at 122km/h was 'an accident waiting to happen', police say.

A 12-year-old Tasmanian girl posing as a learner driver has been charged after being clocked speeding at 122km/h on a public road.

She was pulled over by police at 10.30pm on Saturday on Illawarra Main Road at Perth near Launceston, after the car was detected by a mobile radar speeding in a 100km/h zone.

When questioned by police the girl gave the details of a 16-year-old learner driver, Sergeant Phil Summers told AAP on Monday.

"The officer was suspicious of the details given and ended up transporting the young girl back to police headquarters ... where he found her to be 12-years-old."

The girl was driving an automatic-transmission Mazda borrowed from her cousin, Sgt Summers said.

When stopped, there was a 16-year-old girl in the front passenger seat and a 21-year-old man in the back.

"This is a terrible example of a flagrant disregard for safety not only of the driver, but all other road users," Sgt Summers said.

"It is extremely dangerous because you take the person's inexperience and add the speed to it and it's an accident waiting to happen."

The girl has been charged with offences including unlicensed driving and speeding, as well as giving a false name to police.

She will be dealt with under the youth justice code.

The infringement comes a week after a man was charged with driving at 200km/h, twice the speed limit, on a country road in northern Tasmania.

He was stopped on Mole Creek Road near Deloraine on December 6 and will face court at a later date.

His car has been impounded for a month.
