A Tasmanian man used a stolen identity to make a drug run from Sydney to Hobart with the illegal drug ice hidden in his underpants, police allege.

A sniffer dog picked up Joseph Roy Wallner, 22, during a random inspection when he arrived at Hobart Airport on Friday.

Detective Inspector Jason Elmer said officers subsequently found 280 grams of crystal methylamphetamine, which has a potential street value of $280,000.

"Inquiries have led police to believe that (Wallner) travelled to Sydney earlier that day from Hobart and returned to Hobart and on both those flights police will allege, travelled using false particulars," Insp Elmer said.

He was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and two counts of travelling under a false name.

Wallner made a brief court appearance on Monday where he did not enter pleas and the matter was adjourned until July 26.

Detectives are working with interstate investigators to determine where the man acquired the drug, which they said could have been broken into 2800 deals.

"He had hidden them in his underwear," Insp Elmer said.

"This is one of the most significant quantity of drugs that we've located probably in the past two years."
