The national holiday road toll has jumped to 35 - seven more than for the past two years - following the death of a motorcycle rider in Tasmania.
Twenty-eight people died on Australian roads over the Christmas-New Year period in 2014/15 and 2013/14.
The most deaths for the 2015/16 holiday season occurred in NSW, where 10 people died during the 12-day period, three more than the previous year.
The holiday toll also jumped in Victoria, where eight people died compared to just four the previous year.
There were five fatalities in Queensland (up from four).
Three people died on South Australian roads, an improvement on the previous year's result, when it led the national toll with eight lives lost.
Western Australia recorded two fatalities, down from three.
The ACT and the Northern Territory were fatality-free for the 2014/15 holiday period, but recorded one and two fatalities respectively in 2015/16.
The latest fatality occurred in Tasmania, where a motorcycle rider died in hospital following a head-on crash with a car in Rocherlea, near Launceston, on Sunday.
The rider, named by police as Underwood man Andrew John Lubke, 51, lost control and crossed double lines, police said.
He was taken to the Launceston General Hospital in a critical condition and underwent surgery but later died.
His death takes Tasmania's holiday road toll to four, compared with two in 2014/15.
