Tasmania public teachers strike pay deal

After lengthy negotiations including stop-work action, Tasmania's public sector teachers have agreed to a pay offer.

Tasmania's public school teachers have reached a pay deal with the state government after lengthy negotiations which included stop-work action.

The island state's branch of the Australian Education Union on Friday confirmed acceptance of a pay offer which will deliver a two per cent pay rise in the first year, followed by a 2.5 per cent increase in each of the subsequent two years.

The offer is less than the union's initial demand for three per cent per year increase, along with a cap on class sizes and more in-class support and professional development.

But the union said the settlement "delivers fair pay and workload fixes".

In a joint statement Premier Will Hodgman and Treasurer Peter Gutwein said the pay offer comes along with a range of improvements to terms and conditions for teachers.

"Critical to the agreement has been the AEU this week moving away from a three per cent per year pay rise demand," the statement read.

"The Government has consistently said from day one that such a pay increase was simply not affordable for the budget."

Despite the agreement with teachers, the Tasmanian Liberal government's public sector pay woes continue, with plans later on Friday by nurses and midwives to stop work and call for their concerns to be addressed.

"Nursing is a national market and without a comparative package of wages and conditions for workers we will see an exodus of these valuable staff from the state and an inability to attract new nurses to the public sector," Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd said.
