Tasmanian batting woes in Shield

Tasmania have spent the off-season focused on improving batting performance but the top order has failed in the first match of the new season.

Tasmanian coach Dan Marsh is confident his Sheffield Shield side will not succumb to the batting weakness that characterised the team last season.

The Tigers on Saturday fell 162 runs short in their season opener against a star-studded Western Australian outfit, and afterwards Marsh admitted the home side wasn't good enough.

All out for 189 in the first innings and 217 in the second, it was Tassie's top order that failed, providing a chilling reminder of the 2014-15 summer.

"It can't be like the last," Marsh told reporters post-match when reminded of the past woes.

"We've done a lot of hard work in the off season to improve our game and improve our resilience when we're put under pressure."

Skipper George Bailey (63, 68) top-scored for Tasmania in both innings but his efforts could not resurrect a miserable start.

In the second innings Tasmania's top-four batsmen contributed a combined score of 51 runs.

The top three, Ben Dunk (7, 14), Dominic Michael (43, 4) and Alex Doolan (13, 16), will each be lucky to retain their spots for the next round against Queensland, starting Friday

"At the end of the day, not good enough, outplayed," Marsh said of the match.

WA boasted a bowling attack including Mitchell Johnson, Mitch Marsh, Jason Behrendorff and Ashton Agar.

And veteran batsman Michael Klinger added a double-ton and half-century for visitors.

"We need guys to be making some runs up the top," Marsh said.

"That sets the game up. And we're not getting it at the moment."
