Tasmanian cricket coach Dan Marsh sacked

On the back of repeated poor Sheffield Shield form, Dan Marsh has been sacked as Tasmania's senior cricket coach.

Dan Marsh has been sacked as Cricket Tasmania's senior coach just days after insisting he's the right man for the job.

Chairman Andrew Gaggin on Thursday announced the 43-year-old's contract had been terminated, effective immediately.

The move came as pressure mounted on Marsh with repeated dismal Sheffield Shield performances, which put the Tigers firmly in the cellar of the domestic first-class competition.

"The players are the ones who perform on the field, but the head coach has ultimate responsibility for results and performance," Gaggin said in a brief statement.

"On behalf of the Cricket Tasmania Board, management, staff, members and fans generally, I would like to thank Dan for his period as coach and service to Tasmanian cricket."

Following Sunday's nine-wicket loss to Western Australia, Marsh was forced to defend his management, admitting it had been tested in recent times.

"I do," a confident Marsh answered when asked if he felt he was the best person to take the side forward.

"We've tried a lot of different things from a coaching perspective and we've reviewed what we've been doing all along to try and get the best out of us as a coaching group. It's not translating on the pitch."

In 2013-14, Marsh's first season as coach, Tasmania finished second last on the Shield table in a result repeated the following year.

In 2015-16, Tasmania collected the wooden spoon and could be on track to do so again.

In brighter days, the son of former Australian wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, Dan was a Tasmanian skipper in 2006-07 and led the state to their first then-Pura Cup title.

His sacking comes after the January decision not to renew the contract of Hobart Hurricanes coach Damien Wright.

It's a period of change for Cricket Tasmania which also gets a new chief executive in April when former Sydney Thunder manager Nick Cummins takes office.

The interim coaching group for the Tigers' trip to Wollongong to play NSW, and then for the two remaining season matches, is expected to be announced on Friday.
