More than a fortnight after Tasmanian man Peter Watson was swept away by floodwaters, police believe they have found his body.

Search crews made the discovery at about midday (AEST) on Wednesday in the South Esk River at Evandale in the state's north.

Mr Watson's newspaper delivery van was inundated with water nearby on June 7.

His wife was able to escape the vehicle and was later winched to safety by a helicopter.

But Mr Watson, 63, was swept away by the rising floodwater.

"While this is a very sad time for Mr Watson's family and loved ones, we hope this will provide them with some closure," police acting Inspector Phil Summers said in a statement.

A search continues for central Tasmanian farmer Trevor Foster, the uncle of world champion wood chopper David Foster, who was also swept away by the floods.

The 81-year-old was tending stock on his Ouse property on June 6 when his wife saw floods knock him to the ground.

Land, air and water searches including the use of a cadaver dog have failed to find Mr Foster.

Large amounts of debris are making difficult the search of the Ouse River which swelled to 6.7 metres above its usual level during the floods.

The search will continue.

Grandmother Mary Kathleen Alford, 75, was the first victim of the floods that took some Tasmanian rivers to their highest levels since 1929.

More than 110 people were rescued from floodwaters, roof tops and stranded vehicles across Tasmania's north, with some 260 properties flooded.

The damage bill has been estimated in excess of $100 million.
