Tasmanians told to hurry for flu shot

Health authorities are encouraging Tasmanians at risk to get the flu shot ahead of the period of greatest infection.

Winter might be almost half over but health authorities are telling Tasmanians it's still not too late to get a flu shot.

So far there have been 120 cases of flu identified in 2016 across the island state, acting director of public health Mark Veitch said.

"The winter increase in flu is not far off so don't miss the chance for protection," Dr Veitch said in his message to the community.

"It takes a couple of weeks for immunity to kick in, so getting a jab now means you'll likely be covered before you come in contact with the flu virus."

Vaccination is available by contacting a GP or some pharmacies.
