Tassie friendly, not professional online

Tasmanian Facebook users have well above the national average of online friends at 339 compared to 272, new data shows.

Tasmanians boast the largest number of Facebook friends and are avid social media users but despite poor unemployment rates the island's population is failing to embrace professional networking sites such as LinkedIn.

A Sensis survey which polled almost 2000 people and businesses found Tasmanians are the most popular in Australia on Facebook with an average 339 friends, compared to the national average of 272.

"It's surprising to see only one in 20 people in Tasmania have a LinkedIn profile. Almost five times as many people are using LinkedIn in mainland Australia, so it seems like a missed opportunity for Tasmanians to build their professional networks," Sensis spokeswoman Alice Mentiplay said in a statement on Wednesday.
