Tax changes need to fund health: AMA

The Australian Medical Association is urging the federal government not to make tax changes to fund personal income tax cuts.

Revenue raised by changes to the tax system should go towards healthcare instead of personal income tax cuts, doctors say.

Australian Medical Association president Brian Owler says it's not up to doctors to say how governments should raise revenue, including a possible GST hike.

"But what we do want to see is to make the revenue that is raised hypothecated for health. We don't want to see it siphoned off so it can fund personal income tax cuts as the treasurer recently suggested," he told ABC radio on Thursday.
