The tax office has confirmed it is investigating 800 Australian taxpayers linked to a controversial Panama law firm.

The cases are part of a leak of 11.5 million documents from Panama-based firm Mossack Fonseca, which reveals how the rich, including political leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, hide their money.

The Australian Taxation Office in a statement on its website says it has identified 800 taxpayers, with more than 120 of them linked to an associate offshore service provider located in Hong Kong.
