The Brisbane taxi driver who rescued passengers during a fatal attack on a bus driver has been given an award for his bravery.
Aguek Nyok kicked in the back door of the bus to help passengers escape the blaze that claimed the life of 29-year-old bus driver Manmeet Alisher, also known as Manmeet Sharma.
He was handed the Taxi Hero Award for his courageous actions at Moorooka on Brisbane's southside last month.
The father-of-four said he didn't stop to think of his own safety before rushing to save 11 people trapped inside the burning vehicle.
"I never had even a single moment to think 'do I do it or not'. The only thing on my mind was just do it and get these people out," he added.
"I never thought of myself or what might happen."
Mr Nyok, 31, said he has had an emotional meeting with one of the survivors but is trying to put the tragedy behind him.
"Giving him a hand and another chance to live is something amazing," he said.
"It's not an easy experience for me, it's something you can't forget."
He said he does not think of himself as a hero and was surprised when given the award by TaxiCouncil Queensland at a ceremony on Friday.
"Everyone could do this if you see people in danger who need your help," he added.
"It's really important for everyone to come together in terms of the security of our communities.
"We are the citizens - the police aren't going to be everywhere."
Anthony O'Donohue, 48, is accused of throwing an incendiary device at Mr Alisher and has been charged with his murder.
