Her Majesty's loyal Australian subjects shelled out more than $66,000 to fly Prince William and his family around the country during a 10-day visit.

The most expensive part of their Australian tour in April was an overnight trip from Canberra to Uluru, Alice Springs and back.

Flights for William and Kate and their staff for that leg cost a total of $24,090, government documents reveal.

Australia also sent a VIP plane to pick up William, Kate and Prince George from the New Zealand capital Wellington, costing taxpayers a total of $20,460.

That's almost 10 times as much as an Air New Zealand business class flight for two adults and a baby.

Even if their 12 staff had also flown business class from New Zealand, the total cost would have been only $13,827.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's overseas travel during the first half of 2014 cost more than $100,000 a month.

He made three major trips in this time.

The most expensive was a week-long tour of Japan, South Korea and China, during which he finalised two trade deals with Tokyo and Seoul and made progress on one with Beijing.

Flights for that trip, including travel for accompanying media and business figures, cost $368,170.

In January Mr Abbott attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and visited Sri Lanka on his way home.

That trip cost $142,230 in flights.

In June he travelled to France, Canada and US at a cost of $183,480.

The report on official charter flights using RAAF planes also shows taxpayers spent $267,630 flying MPs from Perth to Canberra for parliamentary sittings and a cabinet meeting.
