Taylor needs to enjoy football: Roberts

Gold Coast captain Tyrone Roberts says Ash Taylor needs to rediscover his joy for rugby league before making his return to the NRL.

Gold Coast captain Tyrone Roberts says Ash Taylor is doing well in dealing with the personal issues which have stalled his NRL season.

The halfback is currently on indefinite leave following a difficult first half of 2019 where he struggled to live up to his million-dollar billing for the Titans.

Roberts says the key for the 24-year-old is rediscovering a passion for the game before making his return.

"I'm close with Ash, I've been in contact with him every day," Roberts told AAP.

"He's doing well and we just need him back at the club, getting back into enjoying football. That's the big key for him."

Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan emphasised on Thursday Taylor's absence is open-ended and he'll only return to the line-up once he's ready.

"The most important thing is Ash and we won't rush him," Brennan said.

"His personal wellbeing is the most important thing for us. When he's right, he's right."

In Taylor's absence Roberts partnered with ex-Melbourne playmaker Ryley Jacks in the halves last Sunday to claim an upset win over Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

The pair will keep the partnership going in Friday's clash with the Warriors at Cbus Super Stadium.

"It's the first time since the trials that me and Ryles have come together," Roberts said.

"Me and Ryley are just making sure we're holding down the fort and making sure everyone knows their role.

"He held his own and that's what we need from a half."
