Taylor to go to France despite drug trial

Dave Taylor is expected to report for pre-season training with French club Catalans despite being ordered to stand trial over cocaine charges.

Former State of Origin star Dave Taylor is set to take up his contract with French club Catalans despite being ordered to stand trial over cocaine charges on the Gold Coast.

Taylor was one of three former Gold Coast Titans NRL players, along with Joe Vickery and Jamie Dowling, who were on Thursday committed to stand trial over their alleged involvement in a drug ring.

He is expected to depart to begin pre-season training with the Super League club later this year despite the pending trial hanging over his head.

Taylor signed his two-year deal with the Perpignan-based Dragons in August, with the club fully aware of court proceedings underway against him.

His position with the French club could change should he be convicted, with possible ramifications for his visa.

Taylor was offloaded by the Titans despite having a year to run on his $400,000-a-year deal.

The Titans will still pay a portion - rumoured to be $150,000 - of his contract next year.

Taylor was billed as a marquee signing when he arrived on the Queensland holiday strip from South Sydney in 2013 but he fell out of favour with coach Neil Henry after failing to live up to expectations.

After being left out of the Maroons squad for this year's State of Origin series, he was dropped from the Titans' NRL team to Queensland Cup in June following a number of poor performances.
