A teacher Paul Simpson is dead after a wave knocked a school group into the sea during rough surf at Bells Beach near Torquay in Victoria's southwest.

Paul Simpson, two other teachers and 15 schoolgirls were in the water snorkelling when the group became caught in a rip in what police describe as wild surf.

The group was in knee to waist deep water on a reef when a wave knocked them off their feet and into deeper water.

The 40-year-old teacher suffered a heart attack and was dragged from the water unconscious before paramedics unsuccessfully tried to revive him on the shore.
