New Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk says he plans to bring his own style of football to Australia's national team.

Speaking with SBS News, the Dutchman said Football Federation Australia had given him no instructions on a particular style of play.

"I'm an offensive coach. I was an offensive football player. I like offensive football," he said.

"I like to have the ball, I like to play a good position game, I like to play attractive (football), with a lot of creativity, but I also like to win. That's the most important thing – to win."

Van Marwijk was named the national coach last month after Ange Postecoglou's shock decision not to take the team to the World Cup in Russia.

Sixty-five-year-old Van Marwijk was in charge of the Netherlands when they made the World Cup final in 2010 and most recently guided Saudi Arabia to World Cup qualification for the first time since 2006.

His first match in charge of the Socceroos will be a friendly against Norway on March 24.

Then it's only a matter of months until the World Cup – where Australia will face France, Denmark and Peru in the first round.

"We must do everything to survive the first round… I will nominate players who I think I can have the best result (with). A team needs weapons," Van Marwijk said.

"My experience with Holland in 2010 was that we had good players but didn't have the best players, but at the end, we had the best team and that's also what I'll try to do with Australia."

"If I thought that we didn't have any chance, I wouldn't have taken this job."
