Teen, 14, charged over fire in NSW north

Police have charged a 14-year-old boy with deliberately lighting a fire in NSW's far north that damaged a fire truck and threatened property on Saturday.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged over a deliberately-lit blaze that damaged a fire truck and destroyed sheds, power poles and fences in far north NSW.

Residents of Tabulam, a town west of Casino, were on stand-by to evacuate on Saturday after the fire got out of control and burnt through about 175 hectares of land.

It took several ground crews and aircraft about six hours to contain the blaze, which also took hold of the Tabulam Bridge.

The teenager was later arrested and charged with multiple offences.

He was granted bail to appear at a children's court on September 5.

The boy is the second person to be charged with lighting a fire in the Tabulam area this past week.

A 52-year-old man remains before the courts after allegedly starting a blaze that destroyed about 12 hectares of bushland last Wednesday.
