A teenager has been arrested after a quick-thinking victim of a brutal Melbourne carjacking used his mobile phone to snap photos of his attackers.

The victim, 40, was driving his Mercedes in Malvern East after 3am on Tuesday when his car was repeatedly nudged from behind by another vehicle.

When the Mercedes driver got out of his car to investigate he was allegedly attacked by three people armed with a hammer.

The group took the man's keys but he managed to use his phone to snap photos of those involved as they fled.

"As a result of the pictures taken police were able to broadcast descriptions of the cars (involved)," a police spokeswoman said in a statement.

An hour later police spotted the Mercedes and two other cars allegedly used in the carjacking travelling in convoy in Footscray.

A police helicopter tracked the cars before a BMW was trapped in a dead end street by police on the ground.

Two males fled on foot but one - who police say is 16 - was subsequently arrested cowering in a nearby backyard.

Ambulance Victoria says the 40-year-old victim suffered upper body injuries during the attack.

He was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
